Jesus College Productions is delighted to invite you to our inaugural college play of David Hare's 'Amy's View'.
"it's always the death of the theater. The death of the novel. The death of poetry. The death of whatever they fancy this week [...] It's off to the scaffold with everyone except the journalists!"
MARRIAGE // FAME // FIDELITY // BETRAYAL // LOVE // INTEGRITY
Amy's View is highly metatheatrical, both in its dialogue which creates space for philosophical questions about the theatre, and in its depiction of the boundary between fiction and reality. Jesus College Chapel, the venue of this production, is impossible to see as a normal theatre. Multiple spaces are used as the stage; there is no backstage; the fourth wall is liable to break.
This claustrophobic and intense storyline forces the audience to consider issues of ethics and gender through which we can explore our relationship with the idea of family. The two artistically opposite characters, Esme and Dominic, share one crucial link: Amy. This familial space heightens the ideological debate at hand, and allows Hare to tackle social issues, including the role of women in society, the maternal struggle, and the psychological effects of aging.
